We have an exciting opportunity for a full-time Commissioning Editor to work on our successful and growing Education list, within our Books division.

You will research, commission, develop and deliver new titles, new editions and ancillary digital resources in line with SAGE’s overall objectives and the list’s strategy. You will maximise profitability for your products, and maintain the quality of our publishing in line with our high standards. You will be committed to ensuring SAGE maintains a high level of service to the authors and members of the academic community that we work with. The role will involve close liaison with book authors, editorial, marketing, production and sales colleagues, as well as freelance development editors. Conference and campus travel is also required to build market knowledge and contacts.

Essential Job Functions & Responsibilities

  • Recruit authors to write new titles and new editions from an agreed hitlist;
  • Present new book and new edition proposals to the Editorial Board for approval with sales estimates, pricing, costs and relevant market information;
  • Negotiate terms with authors and get contracts signed;
  • Visit lecturers on campus and attend conferences to build market knowledge and find new authors;
  • Maintain up-to-date records on a database to enable accurate forecasting;
  • Work in collaboration with production and design colleagues to ensure books are appropriately produced within budget;
  • Provide information and copy to support the marketing and sales of each title;
  • Maintain good relationships with authors through regular contact and events (e.g. SAGE Author Party);
  • Use market knowledge and understanding of sales performance to inform strategy.

 

Qualifications & Education

Experience and knowledge required:

  • proven track record of adding value to a publishing programme (for example, through signing or developing products) in line with strategy and market need;
  • strong understanding of the dynamics of academic and/or professional publishing and market conditions;
  • thorough grasp of the economics of book publishing;
  • proven ability to negotiate successfully with authors;
  • proven ability to manage internal and external relationships well;
  • proven ability to project manage publishing products from initiation through to launch;
  • proven experience in conducting market research to inform publishing product development or strategy.
