The Publishing Editor / Senior Publishing Editor …

  • independently manages and develops an extensive journal backlist in accordance with the editorial plan
  • maintains and improves the editorial and academic or professional quality of product lists allocated, maximising revenue and profitability within the areas of the SAGE list assigned
  • ensures that SAGE offers a high level of service to its clients, including societies, editors and authors within the editor's areas of responsibility
  • develops SAGE's status and reputation as an international publisher in the areas allocated

Essential Job Functions & Responsibilities

  • Manage and develop the journal list.
  • Liaise with key partner societies.
  • Liaise directly with journal editors. Meet with editors and develop relations with key company contacts. Inform and involve authors/editors on progress of editorial activities on their journals. Hold editors to account on their performance and adherence to best practice.
  • Attend and represent the company at editorial board meetings where appropriate.
  • Liaise with Editorial and other departments to ensure that the journals are produced, marketed and distributed in an appropriate way and within acceptable costs, and that external and internal relationships are managed well.
  • Represent the company at key conferences and exhibitions.
  • Provide creative support to editors and negotiate with them on terms, content and SAGE’s services.
  • Where appropriate, take responsibility for seeing acquired titles from contract through to transmittal into production and marketing.
  • Negotiate and complete contract renewal process for society-owned or affiliated titles.
  • Identify, advise and act appropriately on ethical and legal questions relating to publication including contract, libel and copyright.
  • Identify current and future market trends; contribute to the company's editorial plan for future development.
  • Where appropriate, take responsibility for one direct report in your team.
  • Deal with some administration and liaison as required to support the work of the Publisher.


Qualifications & Education

  • Degree level education.
  • Competent in use of IT, including use of network resources, Internet, Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, PC functions, document preparation and presentation.
  • Proven experience in journals publishing to manage a list of proprietary and society journals.

Language, Reasoning, Analytical & Mathematical Skills

Interpersonal Communication Skills – you will be communicating daily with people both inside and outside of SAGE and key society partners. Being able to build strong relationships both internally and externally is a key requirement of the role.


Excellent organisation - you will be able to prioritise effectively and delegate efficiently, counting on your project management skills to manage products from early stages through to publication. The pace of work is often high and requires working on a large number of journal projects simultaneously within tight time pressures.


Independent and proactive – you will be confident in working independently with academic authors, editors and professional societies, communicating SAGE strategy and industry developments clearly and confidently to external publishing partners.


Strategic Awareness - you will show an academic, professional and commercial understanding of development in the areas assigned and understand the financial implications of individual projects and lists within the company's development.


Flexibility - the job will require attendance at UK and International conferences or meetings. This will involve working at weekends and evenings when travelling.


Written communication and verbal presentation - Ability to prepare strong written material for reporting purposes and to present confidently and to a consistently high standard.
