  • Overview

    Content development via article commissioning and original research article solicitation (e.g. via Special Collections, including management of Guest Editors). Assisting in peer reviewer selection.

    Essential Job Functions & Responsibilities

    • Journal development via article commissioning (review articles and editorials, approximately 50 articles per journal per annum), with the aims of providing each journal within the AME’s area of responsibility with a consistent stream of high quality manuscripts, likely to be highly cited and (where appropriate) to boost the journal’s likelihood of Clarivate SCIE indexing.
    • Original research article solicitation (principally via Special Collections, including management of Guest Editors); also via other means of promoting the journal such as face to face contacts at conferences and social media.
    • Additionally, commissioning of review article manuscripts and solicitation of original research manuscripts that are likely to be purchased as reprints by pharmaceutical and medical device companies. Liaison with the Commercial Sales department and visits to pharma/medical communications companies.
    • Assisting external Editors-in-Chief/Associate Editors in peer reviewer selection.
    • Conference attendance (including internationally) with the aim of maintaining a solid awareness of the disciplines relevant to the AME’s commissioning remit
    • Liaison with Marketing as required in the development of Special Collections and other Marketing activities.
    • Promotion of journals via social media.
    • Attendance of Commissioning team, Open Access or other meetings as required.
    • Monitoring of and reporting on performance against commissioning targets for journals within the AME’s remit. Contribute to necessary actions to grow revenue on individual journals.
    • Other duties such as reporting, as required by the Executive Managing Editor and Executive Director, Open Access.

    Qualifications & Education

    Degree-level qualification in a biomedical subject is essential.

    • (Ideally) familiarity with the ScholarOne manuscript submission system

    Previous Experience


    • Essential: previous journals publishing experience in an editorial role
    • Essential: previous experience of article-level commissioning
    • Ideally: previous experience of peer review and manuscript decision-making
    • Ideally: familiarity with the pharmaceutical and medical communications industries
