  • Overview

    Management of the Peer Review, and Editorial Development, of leading Open Access engineering and materials science journals, including managing peer review process (referee identification and invitation; decision making and referral of manuscripts to other suitable journals), content development via special issue/topic collection idea generation/Guest Editor solicitation, and original research and review article solicitation

    Essential Job Functions & Responsibilities


    The job functions include, but are not limited to, the following:

    • Decision making on individual manuscripts (revise, accept, reject), both independently and in conjunction with the journal’s Topic Editors-in-Chief.
    • Special issue/topic collection idea generation, inviting and appointing of Guest/Topic Editors
    • Commissioning of review article manuscripts and solicitation of original research manuscripts. This may include attendance of relevant conferences.
    • Active engagement in the manuscript referral process, providing recommendations for our of scope articles for destination titles and liaising with authors as required.
    • Possibility of conference attendance (including internationally) with the aim of maintaining a solid awareness of the disciplines relevant to the ME’s commissioning remit.
    • Liaison with Marketing as required in the development of Special and Topic Collections and other Marketing activities.
    • Promotion of journals via social media.
    • Attendance of Engineering Team, Open Access, or other team meetings as required.
    • Other duties such as reporting on journal performance against budget, as required by the Publisher.

    Qualifications & Education

    Masters-level qualification in an engineering, materials science or physical science subject is essential; the ideal candidate would additionally hold a PhD.

    • Interest in and knowledge of engineering, materials science or physical science subjects
    • PC skills and experience with Microsoft Office software
    • (Ideally) familiarity with the ScholarOne manuscript submission system

    • Able to travel to attend international conferences if required



    Previous Experience

    • Essential: previous experience of peer review and manuscript decision-making
    • Ideally: previous experience of article-level and special/topic collection commissioning
    • Ideally: experience in engineering, materials science or physical science research
    • Ideally: awareness of peer review policies and publication ethics
